The Latest in AI: Top Tech Companies Meet with VP Kamala Harris, Esteemed Scientist Quits Google, and More!
The world of artificial intelligence is rapidly advancing, bringing both great potential and enormous danger. Recently, some of the biggest AI tech companies, including Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic, met with Vice-President Kamala Harris for two hours to discuss the future of AI. President Biden even stopped by to praise their work while cautioning the execs about the potential dangers.
In an “independent exercise” at DEF CON 31, a major hacker event in August, the transparency of existing generative AI systems will be publicly assessed for how well they meet the Biden administration’s AI Bill of Rights blueprint.
Meanwhile, Geoffrey Hinton, a renowned computer scientist and the “godfather of artificial intelligence,” resigned from his high-profile job at Google specifically because he fears unchecked AI development could threaten humanity. He expressed regret over his work on the company’s AI and stated his concerns about “bad actors” using it to manipulate electorates or even start wars.
OpenAI, on the other hand, continues to thrive, raising another $300 million from investors, giving the company a valuation of close to $30 billion. Inflection AI, founded by Deepmind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman and Reid Hoffman, raised $225 million to launch “personal intelligence” chatbot Pi, which uses one of the world’s largest language models to learn and remember its users’ previous interactions.
Amazon’s CEO, Andy Jassy, has announced that they are building a new and improved large language model (LLM) to power Alexa, while Meta has uncovered phony ChatGPT malware running amok on social media.
Inworld is using AI-powered characters to create experiences that change our memories while Metaphysic has created Deep Fakes videos, raising the question of what it even means to be human and conscious in the age of AI.
This Week in XR, a podcast hosted by Futurist Ted Schilowitz, and Magic Leap founder Rony Abovitz, covers tech and two favorite topics: AI and XR. You can find them on Spotify, iTunes, and YouTube.
As AI advances, it is important to consider the potential threats it poses while recognizing its potential to positively impact society. The meeting with VP Kamala Harris, Geoffrey Hinton’s resignation, and Inflection AI’s launch of Pi all demonstrate the rapid progress of AI. It is up to us to use this technology responsibly and ensure that it benefits everyone.
